Biography
Arman Peshtmaljyan is a multi-award-winning composer, arranger, pianist/keyboardist, songwriter, and music producer. As a well-known musician in Armenia, he specializes in jazz, folk, pop while constantly pushing the boundaries of musical genres such as Funk, D’n’B, Lo-Fi Hip Hop, Dream Pop, and Psychedelic Soul. As an independent artist, he writes and releases his own compositions, crafting a signature sound rooted in his rich and diverse musical background.
Arman’s musical journey began in his early school years. He mastered multiple instruments, including piano, percussion, guitar, drums, and harmonica. His passion for music deepened as he pursued higher education at the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas, where he specialized in piano and composition. Later, he continued his studies in Jazz Composition at the Basel Academy of Music, Jazzcampus in Switzerland.
Arman Peshtmaljyan plays in the Armenian State Jazz Orchestra, the leading folk band Armenian Navy Band (BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music), Yerevan Calling, and Zestengusto. He is also the composer, arranger and member of MVF and Goght Bands, shaping their unique sound.
Arman has also produced and arranged music for leading Armenian bands, shaping their sound and contributing to the contemporary Armenian music scene. With over 250 original and collaborative works, he continues to push Armenian music in new directions, blending traditional folk elements with jazz and contemporary styles.
As an artist, Arman has made significant contributions to preserving Armenian folk songs from oblivion. He has rearranged and recorded pieces like “Nstir Im Gyamin” and “Amran Gisher,” marking the first-ever arranged versions of these cultural gems. His recent release, “Zartir Nazelis,” an Armenian “tagh” compiled ethnographically by Komitas Vardapet, showcases his dedication to cultural preservation. His single in the dream pop genre, “Ays Gisher,” has been recognized as pioneering in Armenia.
Arman’s dedication to music has earned him numerous accolades. He was nominated for the World Entertainment Awards for Best Folk Song with “Zartir Nazelis.” He also became a finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest for five of his compositions, with “Ays Gisher” receiving a Jury Special Mention award. His contributions to music have been acknowledged both in Armenia and internationally.
Throughout his career, Arman has performed his music on some of the world’s most renowned stages and festivals, including: Smithsonian Folklife Festival (Washington), UN WEEK-END À L’EST (Paris, France), Caucasus Cultural Festival (Seoul, South Korea), Made in New York Jazz Competition (New York, USA)
He has also played on iconic stages such as: Royce Hall (UCLA, Los Angeles, USA), The Ford – John Anson Ford Theatre (Los Angeles, USA), Millennium Stage – Kennedy Center (Washington), Palacio Libertad (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Sala Zitarrosa (Montevideo, Uruguay), Mazā Ģilde (Riga, Latvia), Basel Jazz Campus (Switzerland)
Beyond performing, Arman is passionate about education and knowledge-sharing. He has conducted music workshops at institutions such as: UCLA (USA), University of New Mexico (USA), Basel Academy of Music (Switzerland). He has also participated in the Center Stage Program (USA) and Found Sound Nation’s Sound Bridge Program, fostering cross-cultural musical collaborations.
Arman Peshtmaljyan continues to shape the future of Armenian music with his boundary-pushing compositions and dedication to preserving cultural heritage. Whether through jazz, folk, or contemporary fusion, his work continues to earn international recognition, making him one of the unique voices in Armenian and world music today.
